Know IT managers the energy efficiency of their infrastructure?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recently produced a report on the efficiency of energy within the data center and found that the use of electricity has quadrupled over the course of 10 years (2000-2010).
The Green Grid, a consortium that brings together IT managers oriented towards a new awareness of "green" has drawn appropriate metrics to measure the energy consumption of the CED.
According to Gartner, spending on technologies of power and cooling will exceed the short one for the server. The incidence of spending it already hovers at around 50%.
Hence the need for companies to adopt Green IT policies, with primary emphasis on cutting energy consumption and, consequently, of the expense. A need also dictated by international measures to reduce polluting emissions (such as the Kyoto Protocol).
The energy efficiency parameters are determined by the efficiency of data center infrastructure (DCiE), the effective use of power (PUE) and the multiplier of the general power of the site (SI-POM).
DCiE expresses the electrical efficiency of a data center as the fraction of total electrical power supplied to the data center that eventually comes to the IT load. Expressed in this way, the efficiency falls between zero and one, and is represented in the form of a percentage, where 100% is the perfect efficiency, which is the situation in which all the power of the data center is available to the IT loads.
In a data center 100% efficient, the power supplied reaches the IT loads. In fact, the electricity is consumed by many other devices in addition to the IT loads: transformers, UPS, distribution wiring, fans, air conditioners, pumps, humidifiers, and lighting system.
Sentinet ³ is designed to be not only an instrument of Unified Monitoring Proactive but an efficient and effective tool for infrastruture Datacenter Management.
But how does it work?
Sentinet ³ is able to measure the energy consumption of the entire data center, of each Server inside the racks and to calculate the PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and DCiE (Datacenter Infrastructure Efficiency) so as to always monitor the efficiency of the CED.
Not only that, with Sentinet ³ is also possible to implement active plans energy-saving auto-off as the client and the sleep of the CED.
