Solaris Monitoring

Processes, memory, disks, file systems, logged-in users and network interfaces of Solaris systems in a single package of checks.

Hardware and operating system under control

The Sentinet³ Solaris Pattern provides full access to the hardware and operating system level monitoring for Solaris on SPARC and x86 hardware. Administrators can follow each running process and see its status, the memory it uses and its CPU consumption.

The Pattern also makes it possible to monitor system events by accessing logs, configuration files and login events.

What it checks

The Pattern’s checks

Every check has operator-configurable thresholds and sends notifications when values exceed them.

System

CheckWhat it verifies
ReachabilityThe machine responds on the network
Swap_memoryPercentage of swap memory used
Physical_memoryPercentage of physical memory in use
Disk I/O statReads and writes per second and transfers per second, for each device
HomeFree space in the home directory
RootFree space in the root directory
VarFree space in the var directory
UsrFree space in the usr directory
CPUPercentage of CPU used
ProcessRunning processes
UserNumber of logged-in users

Network interfaces

With a single query to the server, the Pattern returns this information for each interface.

CheckWhat it verifies
StatusInterface status, up or down
IP addressIP address of the interface
MACMAC address of the interface
SpeedInterface speed, in Mbit
Packet ErrorNumber of packets with errors
TrafficInbound and outbound traffic
Why it matters

What the collected data is used for

  • Performance diagnostics: logs, configuration files and login events help identify the causes of system performance problems.
  • Security policies: the same data supports the enforcement of security policies.
  • Impact analysis: the effects of every configuration change in the Solaris environment can be assessed.
  • Process by process: the status, memory and CPU of each process make it possible to act on the single service that is causing problems.
